Big Update for NEET Aspirants 2026: 10,000+ MBBS Seats increased! Complete Details

NEET 2026 was conducted recently on 3 May 2026. Lakhs of students have given the exam and are now waiting for the result  (expected mid-June). Meanwhile, there’s a big positive update after the NMC amendment that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has added new 10,000+ MBBS seats. Now the total MBBS seats is more than 1,29,603, in 824+ medical colleges.

Previously this number was around 1.18 lakh. This increase is going to benefit for those who appeared for the NEET 2026 now they are preparing for the counselling. In this blog, we will cover a complete update about the NEET 2026 MBBS seats increase, what impact on your chances, counselling strategy and what you should do now.

Latest Official Update: NEET 2026 Seats Increase

NMC and Government has approved 43 new  medical colleges and also given permission in existing colleges. This year 10,000+ MBBS seats were added including government + private colleges.

But what actually is the NMC Amendment 2026?

In simple words, To make smoother the expansion of medical seats all over the country the NMC has corrected the Undergraduate Medical Standards Regulations (UG-MSR 2023) and Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023. The amendment particularly targets three key restrictions that have limited MBBS seats growth:

Key highlights:

  • Removal of the upper limit of 150 seats per medical college.
  • The rule of the upper limit of 100 seats per 10 lakh population has been abolished, which limited the availability of seats based on the state’s population.
  • Distance requirement from 30 minutes travel time to a fixed 10 km (15 km in NE and Himalayan states) relaxation of the college-hospital.

To make it easier for situated colleges these changes are designed to expand and for new colleges to get approvals, especially in underserved areas.

Are 10,000 extra MBBS seats really necessary in 2026?

The simple answer is yes, the actual addition of 10,000 MBBS seats increased, will be a gradual process expanding from 2026 to 2028. But with some important provision. While the amendment paves the way for a significant increase Here’s why:

  • Situated colleges first: Many seat increases will come from spanning current colleges, which takes time for infrastructure and faculty upgrades.
  • Implementation of Phased: To maintain education quality the NMC will likely monitor and approve seat increases in phases.
  • New colleges take longer: Existing new medical colleges include approvals, construction, recruitment, and accreditation, so they won’t add seats instantly in 2026.

NEET 2026 Cutoff Impact: Will It Drop?

A question rises normally: will the NEET cutoff scores drop? The reality is a bit more harsh. With more seats available, Cutoff scores depend on several factors, not just availability of seats. Here’s a break down:

  1. Difficulty of exam: If the NEET paper was easy, many students will score higher, raising the cutoffs. On the contrary, a tricky paper lowers cutoffs.
  2. Number of Candidates: If the highest scores increase. Many aspirants competing can raise cutoffs.
  3. Seat Increase: Eventually lowering cutoffs. More seats can ease competition slightly,
  4. Top Scores Distribution: How many students achieve high marks influences cutoff doorway.
