After a wide spread controversy over the NEET UG 2024 results, the Supreme court of India decided to cancel the scorecards of 1563 candidates today over the allegations of abnormal grace marks granted by NTA. These students are given an option for NEET re-exam on 23 June. The results for this exam will be released before June 30, 2024.
The Apex court on 13th June heard three and other petitions including Alakh Pandey, the founder of Physics Wallah to cancel the NEET UG 2024 wich was conducted on 05 May, 2024 and conduct a NEET re-exam instead as the pattern of grace marks awarded to some candidates seemed fishy. A vacation bench of justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah heard the petitions filed on June 01 before the announcement of results.
Supreme Court commences hearing for the petition of NEET re-exam
On Thursday, Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta addressed the petitions which requested a probe into the matter and requested an immediate stay of forthcoming NEET-UG 2024 counseling. The court has now come to a decision to scrap the scorecards of 1563, asking them either to accept the original score without any grace marks or to re-appear for the test on Sunday, June 23rd.
In the past days, after the commencements of protests by the disappointed NEET-UG Scorecards aspirants and several edutech founders, SC issued a notice to the central government and National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding the objections raised. The court refused to put a stay on NEET-UG counseling and questioned the testing agency’s legitimacy by saying, “Sanctity has been affected, we need answers”.
What brewed this controversy?
This year, around 67 students scored a 720/720 in the NEET exam. Out of which, 6 students from the list of toppers, attempted the exam from the same center in Faridabad, Haryana. Many students raised an allegation of question paper leak to which the NTA responded the sanctity of the exam has not been compromised and no cases of paper leak are found rather about 63 incidents of students using unfair means were reported in the exam out of whom around 23 candidate have been debarred from appearing in the future sessions of NEET.
Many also questioned the sudden release of NEET results. The NEET results were scheduled to be released on 14th June but instead, got released on June 04, 2024. Many students suffered academically due to the discrepancies found in this year’s result. The SC reiterated that no NEET re-exam would be conducted for all candidates, and the counseling will go on as scheduled.
